Cultural offer grows at the Great Museum of the Mayan World

Gran Museo del Mundo Maya. Merida Yucatan

The talent of artisans from Mexico will be appreciated in the Great Museum of the Mayan World of Mérida (GMMMM), a place that, starting in February 2024, will also be the site of the Museum of Popular Art of Yucatán (MAPY), thus increasing its cultural offering through the exhibition of pieces belonging to the collections of Fomento Cultural Citibanamex AC and MAPY itself, as well as a special exhibition on Yucatecan clothing.

The GMMMM, which in the last two years has received more than 220 thousand local and foreign visitors, will have an area starting next year to learn about the history and skill of masters in the field of crafts, some of whom have been recognized with national awards.

Some of the pieces exhibited are by authors from Chiapas, Jalisco, Oaxaca, Puebla, Veracruz, Hidalgo, Guanajuato, Michoacán, State of Mexico, Chihuahua, Guerrero, Mexico City, Tlaxcala and Yucatán, who share a vision of their culture with mostly unique pieces.

These creations are made of various materials and techniques such as ceramics, wood, glass, stone, natural fibers, metalwork, textiles, jewelry, and paper that are presented in the form of masks, musical instruments, toys, and clothing from different towns in Mexico.

The exhibition brings together objects made of copper, blown glass, samplers, trees of life, filigree, ternos, carved wood, rebozos, black clay, molcajetes, alebrijes, guild standards, Talavera, and traditional toys.

The collections are being transferred to the Great Museum of the Mayan World in Mérida after concluding the agreement between the Secretariat of Culture and the Arts of Yucatán and Fomento Cultural Citibanamex AC on the use of the Casa Molina located in the La Mejorada park. The above will allow pre-Hispanic, colonial, and popular art pieces to be admired in the same place, starting in February 2024.

In addition, free workshops will also be offered to delve deeper into popular art and disseminate the work of the community of creators in our country among new generations.
