On December 15, according to the State Coordination of Civil Protection, the formation of a Low Pressure with a cold core is anticipated in the Gulf of Mexico. This situation will give rise, during the afternoon of Saturday the 16th and throughout Sunday, to winds with gusts greater than 60 km/h, moderate to heavy rains, and waves greater than 3.5 meters on the west coast. Likewise, a decrease in temperatures is forecast that will persist from Monday, December 18 to Friday, December 22.
According to the Procivy State Monitoring and Warning System, the aforementioned Low Pressure, called “Cold Low” or “Dynamic”, will move towards Florida, United States. Previously, it will reinforce Cold Front No.16, currently north of Yucatán, generating a new front that will be accompanied by a polar air mass.
The information indicates that this atypical winter phenomenon will be located about 370 km above the Gulf of Mexico, close to Yucatán.
“Winter low pressures, known as storms in other latitudes, cause frontogenesis, that is, the formation of Cold Fronts characteristic of winter seasons,” said Enrique Alcocer Basto, head of Procivy. “In this atypical case, its proximity to Yucatán will result in an increase in wind and waves, especially in the west of the State.”
The climatic event will result in northwest winds with gusts exceeding 60 km/h throughout the state of Yucatán during the afternoon of Saturday the 16th and Sunday the 17th. This will generate waves greater than 3.5 meters in Celestún and 2.5 to 3 meters in the rest of the Yucatecan coast.
From Monday, December 18 to Friday, December 22, a drop in temperatures is expected, with minimums of 12 to 14°C in the south, 15 to 17°C in the interior of the state and over 19°C in the coastal zone. Highs will range between 25-28°C in most of Yucatán and 23-25°C on the coast.
Heavy rain
As for rain, moderate and occasionally strong intensity with electrical activity is anticipated as the new Cold Front passes.
In recent events, the entry of Cold Front No. 16 last Sunday, December 10, generated notable gusts of wind, especially in coastal areas, with impacts such as falling trees and electrical power outages in several municipalities. Municipal coordination and the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) have responded appropriately to these situations.
The population is urged to stay informed about weather conditions and take precautions against rain, wind, waves, electrical activity and a drop in temperature. It is recommended to follow the instructions of the health authorities and the Harbor Master’s Office, as well as stay alert in the event of any emergency by dialing the number 9-1-1.
“We are in coordination with various government entities to monitor the effects and take the necessary preventive and corrective measures,” concluded the head of Procivy.
