WestJet Airlines will resume its temporary Toronto-Mérida connection once a week starting November 21, to serve dozens of Canadian visitors who choose Yucatán as their second-home during the winter season.

Around 9,000 visitors are expected to travel from Canada to enjoy the beaches of the Yucatecan coast for four months, which represents an important economic injection for service providers in places such as Progreso, Telchac, and Sisal, which are points of great attraction. for travelers.

This route between Mérida and Toronto will resume operations once a week, after almost two years of cancellation due to the Covid-19 pandemic, during that period, many Canadian visitors chose to fly to Cancún to reach Yucatán.

The intermittent route began operating in 2015 and maintained four consecutive seasons before its suspension in March 2020, due to disease control and containment measures.

The airline reported that the route registered an average of 77 percent occupancy on arrival and departure flights from the International Airport of the City of Mérida; The aircraft used for this route are the B737-700 and the B737-800 from WestJet, with capacities of 142 and up to 174 passengers, respectively.

Airport authorities highlighted that this route adds a new international connection for Mérida, which currently communicates with seven international destinations, expanding opportunities for travelers who want to spend three or four months in Yucatán.

According to data from the Tourism Promotion Secretariat (Sefotur), Canadian tourism occupies third place in importance in Yucatán, only behind American and European visitors. During the winter season of 2022, around 10 thousand Canadians stayed in beach houses and condominiums from Chuburná to Telchac Puerto, Sisal, Celestún, and Rio Lagartos, leaving an economic impact estimated at 100 million dollars during the four months of high season.
