The president of the Mayab Fruit Growers Union, Freddy Domínguez Aké stated that the price of a kilo of lemon continues to rise in the local market, costing from 28 to 33 pesos because there is not enough citrus to supply the entire State, which increases the price of the product.
Domínguez Aké stressed that the small harvest of Persian lemon is being sold to the national market at a price ranging from 250 to 300 pesos per 20-kilo box, and the product of low quality and little juice is what is sold in the local market at a very high price for consumers.
He highlighted that due to the demand for citrus in the local market, many producers do not wait for the Persian lemon to mature and develop, they lower it without little growth and maturity, and also with very little juice for consumption, there is not enough product to supply the State.
Domínguez Aké highlighted that this situation includes sweet oranges, tangerines, and grapefruits, there was not enough production to supply the local market, there is a shortage of citrus fruits, including sour oranges, the little that moves in the local market is a green product, it is not sweet due to its lack of ripening.
Finally, he warned that in 2023, citrus production has completely collapsed, the drought was a determining factor for there not being good harvests of sweet orange, grapefruit, tangerines, sour orange and Persian lemon, let’s see how citrus farming fares in 2024 which is already approaching, hoping that it will be a year of many rains for the benefit of the Yucatecan countryside.
