Animal cruelty is a serious and widespread problem in Yucatán, Mexico, where millions of animals suffer from physical and psychological harm every year. Despite the existence of some laws that prohibit and punish animal abuse, the enforcement is weak and inconsistent, and the penalties are too lenient to deter future offenders. Some of the most common forms of animal cruelty in Yucatán include torture, poisoning, burning, burying alive, or raping animals.
These acts not only violate the rights and dignity of animals but also pose a public health and safety risk, as they can be linked to other forms of violence and crime. Therefore, it is urgent that the authorities and society take more action to prevent and stop animal cruelty and to promote a culture of respect and compassion for all living beings.
In the case of Max, the events took place on Tuesday, November 28, shortly before 8 in the morning on 85th Street between 44 and 46 in the Revolución neighborhood, located to the east of the port.
At the scene of the incident, you could see the damage that “Max” suffered. According to witnesses, the dog was walking down the street when another dog (which came out of a house) attacked him and started a fight between both animals. Then the owner of the second animal came out of his house and began hitting “Max,” first with an old television, then with a hammer, and then with a machete.
Upon seeing the scene, neighbors intimidated the subject by telling him that they would call the police, so the subject locked himself in his home, taking his dog with him. While “Max” remained on the street with severe head injuries that were bleeding profusely. A group of neighbors protected the dog and tried to stop the bleeding while the Municipal Police and the Ecological Police arrived.
