The Temporary Debates Commission of the INE foresees that the three debates for the Presidency of the Republic will take place in CDMX.

The Temporary Debates Commission of the National Electoral Institute (INE) unanimously approved the Basic Rules for holding debates between the candidates for the Presidency of the Republic during the 2023-2024 Federal Electoral Process, as well as the criteria for the selection of the moderators.

As president of the Temporary Debates Commission, counselor Carla Humphrey reported that these are the guidelines that must follow the design of the formats and execution of the 2024 presidential debates, “as exercises that promote the free exchange of ideas, with “flexible and innovative formats, with themes that reflect the interest of Mexicans.”

Among the Basic Rules, it was defined that the three debates for the Presidency of the Republic will be held in Mexico City, prioritizing technical criteria and the containment of institutional spending, and will be held, tentatively, on Sundays, April 7, April 28, and May 19, at 8:00 p.m.

Likewise, the topics that will be covered in the presidential debates need to be of utmost importance and concern for citizens, such as security, the economy, the fight against corruption, health, education, poverty, environment, migration, and foreign policy. Which would include attention to vulnerable groups, as well as politics and government, all of which are illustrative but not limiting.

For the organization of the presidential debates, eight specific criteria will be proposed to the General Council: moderation, interaction between candidates, characteristics of the questions, citizen participation, debate formats, topics, inclusion measures and production criteria.

Regarding inclusion measures, the Basic Rules contain the participation of Mexican Sign Language interpreters, as well as transmission on social networks and the INE YouTube channel. In addition, the possibility of disseminating the debates in indigenous languages, such as the Maya, will be analyzed.

In the presidential debates that will take place in 2024, the objective of moderation will be to facilitate dialogue, the exchange of ideas, and the contrast of proposals between those persons competing for the Presidency of the Republic.
