Joaquín Díaz Mena was the winner of Morena’s selection to coordinate the Defense of Transformation committees in the state of Yucatán, consolidating himself as the virtual candidate for governor in 2024.
Joaquín Díaz Mena, known as “Huacho”, served for more than 10 years in the National Action Party (PAN). In March 2018, when he was still a federal deputy for that party, he resigned to be Morena’s candidate for governor of Yucatán. He lost the elections, but after the victory of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, he obtained the position of Welfare delegate.
“Huacho” is originally from the municipality of San Felipe and until he resigned from the PAN, he held all public positions thanks to that party. From 2001 to 2004 he was municipal president of his town. Later, he became a local and federal representative.
From 2009 to 2011 he held the position of SEP delegate in Yucatán. He was appointed by the former president of Mexico, Felipe Calderón Hinojosa. In 2010 he was national advisor of the PAN.
In the 2012 elections, Díaz Mena was the PAN candidate for the government of the state of Yucatán. On that occasion, with 41.07 votes, he came in second place compared to his opponent, the PRI member Rolando Zapata Bello.
In 2018, he tried again to be the PAN candidate for governor, but he did not succeed and Mauricio Vila Dosal was selected. And along the way so as not to be left out of positions of power, he raised his hand to reach the Senate of the Republic. They did not give him the candidacy either. He denounced that he prevailed over Raúl Paz – now also a Morena member -, which is why he resigned and joined Morena.
Upon his arrival in Morena, the name Rogerio Castro Mena was mentioned as a candidate for governor, a position that was taken from him by Huacho Díaz Mena. He lost the election and came in third place with 20.46 percent of the votes.
He aspires to become the first governor of Morena in Yucatán. Two of the candidates for the same candidacy declined in his favor. These are Jessica Saiden and the senator, Jorge Carlos Ramírez Marín.
