An earthquake in Nepal left 157 people dead and several materials damaged such as collapsed buildings. Authorities warn that the number of fatalities could increase.

On the night of Friday, November 3, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake occurred in the northwest of Nepal, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGC). The tremor occurred 42 km from Jumia, in Karnali province, notes USGC.

So far, 157 deaths and 140 injured people have been reported, but authorities fear that the number could increase in the coming days.

According to Reuters, Nepalese officials fear that the death toll will increase because contact has not yet been established with residents in the mountainous area near the epicenter of the earthquake.

“The number of injured could rise to hundreds and the number of dead as well,” explained Harish Chandra Sharma, an official from the Jajarkot district of the citizens 500 kilometers west of the capital Kathmandu, in the mountainous area.

“Many houses have collapsed; many others have cracks. “Thousands of residents spent the entire night in cold open fields because they were too scared to enter the cracked houses when the aftershocks hit,” he added. According to international media, Nepali Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal went to Jajarkot.
