More and more children suffer from type II diabetes mellitus, which 10 years ago was only seen in adults, said the director of the UADY Faculty of Medicine, Carlos Castro Sansores, who indicated that this is due to the obesity rate. children in Yucatán, since one in five is overweight.

The research professor indicated that current figures from the health authorities reveal that Yucatan is 12 percent above the average in type II diabetes mellitus, this is linked to the high rate of obesity in the entity, caused by the consumption of Junk food or large amounts of food.

“Yucatán is in the first place in diabetes in the country, and this is associated with the fact that we are also among the first places in overweight and obesity, now not only in adults but also in children,” he stressed.

“In the case of childhood diabetes, slightly particular circumstances arise; For many years it was called type I diabetes, which is insulin-dependent, which has a different origin than that of adults; However, recently we are seeing children between 10 and 12 years old who already have type II diabetes mellitus, as well as other pathologies that 10 years ago were only seen in adults,” he assured.

He announced that next January, at the Faculty of Medicine, the results of a study being carried out by the Bachelor of Nutrition will be presented, which will demonstrate the seriousness of metabolic problems in childhood.

“The Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition is being carried out together with Unicef ​​(United Nations Children’s Fund); The results shown are quite alarming, especially that children of this age are already presenting these types of conditions typical of adults,” she stressed.
