Blow for Claudia Sheinbaum, her “protégé” lost the candidacy to govern the capital

On Saturday, November 11, the Morena party defined the winners of the candidate selection process for the governorship of nine states in the 2024 elections, who toured their respective entities for more than a month and were chosen through citizen surveys.

In Mexico City, Omar García Harfuch, the protégé of presidential candidate Claudia Shainbaum Pardo, won the polls, but will not be a candidate to govern the Mexican capital. This is due to the gender parity criteria established by the electoral authority, so the candidate will be Clara Brugada, who ranked second in those surveys.

During a press conference held in Mexico City, the national leader of Morena, Mario Delgado, first presented the results of the surveys carried out to define the candidate for Yucatán and Veracruz.

The announcement of the candidates occurs amid an imbalance due to the gender parity criteria issued by the National Electoral Institute (INE), in which parties are asked to nominate five women and four men in total for the elections.

For this reason, Morena yesterday presented a protocol to provide alternatives to those who win but cannot be candidates due to gender parity guidelines.

Members of Morena and Mario Delgado offered the last live conference to publicize the official policies and politicians to lead the candidacies in the nine governorships facing the elections in 2024.

With a message that was given at 03:30 a.m., central Mexico time, the official list of candidates was announced, to whom, after the results offered since nine in the morning, they had already applied the gender parity rule.

After the rule is applied, the list of candidates would be as follows:

  • Ciudad de México: Clara Brugada
  • Chiapas: Eduardo Ramírez
  • Guanajuato: Alma Alcaraz
  • Jalisco: Claudia Delgadillo
  • Morelos: Margarita González
  • Puebla: Alejandro Armenta
  • Tabasco: Javier May
  • Veracruz: Rocío Nahle
  • Yucatán: Joaquín Díaz Mena
