120 million pesos (US$6.6 million) would cost to repair the José Peón Contreras Theater

At least 120 million pesos are required for the restoration and rehabilitation of the “José Peón Contreras” Theater, which caught fire due to a short circuit on November 1, 2022.

The coordinated work between the Ministry of Culture of the Government of Mexico, through the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), and the Government of the State of Yucatan, allowed the conclusion of the executive project of work, restoration, and rehabilitation for the “Jose Peon Contreras”, cataloged as a historical and artistic monument and protected property of the Cultural Heritage of the Historic Center of the Yucatan capital.

The project was carefully prepared, due to the historical and symbolic importance of the building, and contemplates an investment of 120 million pesos, which will be used for restoration, renovation, rehabilitation, and equipment works for the preservation of this theater, inaugurated in 1908.

In the beginning, as a result of the inspection, it was identified that the incident caused mainly damage in the third level of the theater, in the area close to where the fire started, so the damages are more noticeable in the decorative elements of the precinct: the mural of the dome and the plasterwork.

The furniture was affected: doors, windows, and stained glass windows, as well as electrical and lighting installations, ducts, and pipes. The proscenium, the exterior balconies of the third-level boxes and galleries, as well as the soffit of the foyer, showed soot accumulation.
