Tren Maya will bring development to Southeast Mexico for another 50 or 100 years: López Obrador

President López Obrador stated that the Tren Maya will bring development to the region without affecting traditional activities.

During a meeting with archaeologists, anthropologists, and restorers of archaeological sites in Uxmal, Yucatán, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) affirmed that the Tren Maya will bring development to the southeast of the country for another 50 or 100 years and will not disrupt traditional activities.

“And people can make a living from this for a long time, for the new generations. Yes, it will continue, and it must continue—agriculture, beekeeping, fishing, crafts, everything, the petroleum industry, which will still have demand in the world of oil, but only for another 20, 30 years ahead.”

“But what we are doing here (the Tren Maya), this is for 50, half a century, a century. This will give life to the southeast,” he emphasized to applause from the audience.

As part of his tour of the region to oversee the operation of the train, the head of the Executive referred to the significance of Mayan culture and said that the project would contribute to more people understanding the greatness of that civilization.

The President responded to the request for more support and resources made by José Huchim Herrera, the director of the Uxmal archaeological zone, to continue working on the restoration and conservation of the site’s buildings.

“Don’t worry, Huchim, there will be funds in the future to continue working,” said the head of the Federal Executive.

López Obrador described the southeastern region of Mexico as “exceptional” and asserted that there is no other region in the world with as many archaeological remnants.

A short circuit temporarily halted the President’s event around 4:39 PM, just a few minutes after the start of the event titled “The Historical and Cultural Depth of the Great Mayan Nation” at the Uxmal archaeological site.

Smoke began to emerge from the equipment located next to the building known as the Quadrangle of the Nuns. According to initial information, a short circuit caused small flames and smoke that attracted the attention of those present, including the President.

López Obrador stated that both the Tren Maya and the Interoceanic Corridor Train in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec were able to materialize “because (previous governments) did not privatize the southeastern railway or the one in the Isthmus, because they were not interested in the southeast, not even for looting the region.”

He assured that the railway project in the Mayan region would revive the region’s economy, generating employment and well-being.
