They report a slight increase in the number of marine mammal strandings that have been sighted on the coasts of the port of Progreso.

In this regard, the director of the Ecological Police of this locality, Obdulio Mena Sánchez, said that in 2022, a total of 4 dolphin strandings were attended, while in 2023, 5 cases have already been registered, up to the beginning of this month of October.

According to the corporation, the last stranding occurred a few days ago, so the personnel went to secure the area and bury the body.

The population was asked to avoid touching the specimens that strand and are sighted, as they could acquire microorganisms that could be harmful to their health.

“When the report is verified, the specimen is secured, measurements and all the protocol are taken and we bury it on-site to preserve it, while the biologists from the UADY arrive,” he explained.

“The dolphin cannot be touched without gloves, because we don’t know what disease it is carrying, apart from the fact that they are carriers of salmonella and diseases that can be transmitted to us,” he added. He also requested to make the corresponding report, so that the established protocol in case of stranding is complied with.
