Mexico is full of wonderful destinations that can be reached by traveling along its roads. And just as there are some that are quite short and easy to travel, there are others that seem endless and can take you to places you never even imagined.
For many, traveling by road is a most pleasant and adventurous experience, especially for those who love driving on these roads full of landscapes and surprises. If this is your case you have to know which is the longest road in Mexico…
The longest road and its multiple destinations
If you are willing to start a long travel adventure, or simply want to know which is the longest road in Mexico, you should know that there are several that literally cross a large part of the country.
But the one that takes the medal for the longest is the Gulf Highway, also known as Federal Highway 180. This long route goes from Matamoros to Cancun and has 2,293 kilometers, which you can travel in about 24 hours or even more, crazy!
According to data from the online store of historical maps of Mexico, Mapoteca Mx, the Gulf Highway goes through Matamoros, Tampico, Veracruz, Coatza/Mina, Villahermosa, Carmen, Campeche, Merida, and finally Cancun.
Other long highways
In one of its maps, Mapoteca Mx also revealed some other very long roads. One of them is the Pacific Highway, which is 2,259 kilometers long and runs through places like Puerto Vallarta, Manzanillo, Lázaro Cárdenas, Acapulco, Huatulco, Tehuantepec and Tapachula.
Following it is the International Highway, also known as Federal Highway 15. Through it you can leave from Mexico City and travel through places like Toluca, Morelia, Guadalajara, Tepic, Mazatlan, Culiacan, Obregon, Hermosillo and reach Nogales.
Federal Highway 15 is 2,171 kilometers long, which you will travel in about 1 day and 7 hours, according to Google Maps.
The rest of the list:
- The Mapoteca Mx map included a list of 11 roads cataloged as the longest in the country.
- And after the Carretera Internacional there are also:
- Carretera Norte/Ribereña, with 2,047 km.
- Central Highway, with 1,865 km.
- Transpeninsular Highway, with 1,682 km.
- Federal Highway 57, with 1,256 km
- La Nacional Highway, 1,175 km (1,175 miles)
- Federal Highway 40, 1,143 km (1,143 miles)
- Federal Highway 54, 1,113 km (1,113 miles)
- Carretera Sur, with 1,108 km
Roads in Mexico
It never hurts to know well all the roads you can access in Mexico, and according to the National Road Network of the Mexican Transport Institute, our country has 176,984 kilometers of paved roads.
Of that figure, 50,798 kilometers are federal highways, while 103,053 are state highways. Likewise, 10,923 kilometers are occupied by toll roads, and there are 1,333 toll plazas.
There is no doubt that Mexico is a country worth traveling through and visiting different destinations, but remember that whenever you travel by road you should always be cautious and make sure your car is in the best conditions. Have a good trip!
