Andrés Roemer was arrested after spending at least two years on the run in Israel.
Andrés Roemer, writer and ex-diplomat, was arrested in Israel today October 2, 2023 and will soon be extradited to Mexico, where he is wanted for several complaints of sexual abuse filed by several women, confirmed President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
“This person was arrested in Israel and is going to be extradited, today he is going to report on this case Secretariat of Foreign Affairs. Today we were informed that the extradition was granted or will be granted,” said the president in his Monday morning press conference.
Andrés Roemer, of Jewish origin, remained a fugitive in Israel after multiple accusations against him in Mexico City, where the Mexico City District Attorney’s Office opened investigations after complaints filed by several victims and obtained an arrest warrant against the ex-diplomat.
Roemer was arrested after the international department of the State Prosecutor’s Office submitted a request for his extradition to the Jerusalem District Court, according to the Israeli Ministry of Justice.
The writer is considered “extraditable to Mexico for the crimes of rape attributed to him in the extradition request,” the Israeli Justice Ministry said in a statement informing of Roemer’s arrest.
Mexico filed five formal extradition requests since 2021 against Roemer, who is accused of aggravated sexual abuse and rape after in February of that year dozens of women broke their silence and accused him of such crimes committed during work interviews at his home.
The former diplomat had a red notice issued in 2022 by Interpol in order to locate and arrest him, at the request of the Attorney General’s Office at the request of the Mexico City Prosecutor’s Office, which is conducting the investigations against Roemer for sexual abuse.
