Five women received the award on the occasion of International Indigenous Women’s Day, which was celebrated on September 5th.
They are Agustina del Carmen Tah Pech, Fabiola Canché Ay, Gertrudis Chimal Chan, Bibiana Poot Chan and highlighted the recognition of Eugenia Cupul Canul, 90 years old by actively participating as a member of the Supreme Mayan Council and her work within the home consisted of supporting her husband in economic development and was dedicated to the sale of products for the education of their children.
She specified that when she became a widow in 2017, she began her work in an altruistic way in the Mayan church of Kantunilkín, and from that date, she began with the elaboration of candles and candleholders, which were put on sale at the entrance of the church during the traditional festivities. In addition, she currently serves as an instructor to teach her colleagues to continue contributing to economic development.
The director of the Institute of Social and Solidarity Economy in Quintana Roo, Perla Aguilar Lara, informed that the selection of the Indigenous women’s award was through a call for proposals in health and traditional medicine, in order to receive the award consisting of recognition and economic incentive.
Among other authorities present were the head of the INPI office in Quintana Roo, Venancia Koh Chuc, and the delegate of INMAYA in the northern zone, Bernardo May Pat.
