Frenzy over eclipse glasses in Yucatán

Although the commercial sector did not expect a huge economic impact from the annular eclipse of the sun, in the vicinity of some observation points, the sale of glasses and other products increased.

Special glasses were undoubtedly the most in-demand products. These accessories flew from the stores as the date approached. Its price varied, from 50 pesos to 149 pesos in some places. On Facebook, some people offered the product for 67 pesos plus shipping.

The furor to get the last-minute product was such that even a grocery store chain put a limited quantity on sale in a few branches for 50 pesos each.

Given the lack of lenses, many chose to get welding masks, although in many cases they only asked for glass for the number 14, the only one recommended to be able to see the eclipse.

Other stores, especially department stores, took the opportunity to advertise more complex items, such as telescopes and binoculars. Outside of that, in some places there was the sale of products, this is the case of Maxcanú, where a bazaar was held at the headquarters of the Tres Cruces neighborhood. The attendees were able to get everything from crafts to desserts and food.

Visitors to that municipality were offered to live for 600 pesos, an “experience in the trails and caves of Oxkintok.”

The package included tickets to Oxkintok, a 2-kilometer trail tour, a visit to five caves, glasses to view the eclipse, a commemorative cap, and a snack.
