Everything is ready for the “Walk of the Souls” in Merida

You still don’t know which destination you will visit for the Day of the Dead, venture to Merida, Yucatan, where one of the biggest celebrations takes place: Festival de las Ánimas 2023 and within this event the well-known Paseo de las Ánimas.

But, what is the “Walk of the Souls” (Paseo de las Ánimas) and when is it celebrated?

The “Paseo de las Ánimas” is a unique event, rooted in Yucatecan tradition, that has captivated audiences around the world. In 2017 alone, more than 50,000 people gathered to be part of this unique experience, which has become an unmissable attraction on the dates of the dead.

During the Paseo de las Ánimas, the path that, according to ancestral beliefs, the souls of the deceased had to travel in Mérida in times past is recreated.

The procession departs from the General Cemetery and culminates at the majestic Arch of San Juan, following a tradition that highlights the values and customs of Meridians and Yucatecans.

The procession itself is a manifestation of diversity, as it is made up of people of all ages characterized as the deceased, wearing typical Yucatecan costumes.

During the event, visitors can delight in the exhibition of genuine Yucatecan altars of the dead, as well as enjoy a sample of the delicious regional gastronomy.

There are also Mayan ceremonies and a “vaquería de las ánimas”, enriching the experience with the cultural heritage of the region.

It was in 2008 when the Mérida City Hall instituted “El Paseo o Corredor de las Ánimas”, an annual event that should not be missed. In addition to showcasing how the faithful departed are experienced in Mérida, the Paseo de las Ánimas combines attractive artistic events designed for the whole family.

Enjoy the Festival de las Ánimas in Mérida, Yucatán

Beyond the Paseo de las Ánimas, Día de Muertos in Mérida extends over the course of a week with the “Festival de las Ánimas” (Festival of the Souls), which is celebrated from October 24 to November 2.

During this time, the city is filled with cultural, artistic, and recreational activities in honor of the faithful departed.

The program includes the setting up of altars, folkloric music, photographic exhibits, conferences, theater, and many other activities that express the deep respect that Mérida has for this emblematic festivity.
