Cinema legend Martin Scorsese promoted his latest production “The Moon Killers” in CDMX

Famous American director Martin Scorsese presented his new film, The Moon Killers, in Mexico City, where he recounted his experience living with the Osage Indian nation for several years and all that he was able to learn from them both as a filmmaker and as a human being.

“What I wanted to know was more about the culture, their cultural behavior, going to funerals, weddings, spending normal time with them. I wanted to know the value of who they are, how they live their lives and what is the common denominator between them and us,” the Oscar winner for The Departed in 2007 told a press conference.

With eight decades of life and many of them making films, Scorsese, one of the most relevant filmmakers of this time, acknowledged that he always learns in the production process of each film and that in this one the lessons were, especially, about “respect”.

When asked if cinema can make a difference for indigenous people, the director of films such as The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) or Taxi Driver (1976) considered that “without a doubt”, although he acknowledged that there are many film projects that have talked about these groups, so in his film he sought to raise the aesthetic level and delve “into the heart and soul” of the Osage nation.

The film, whose cinematographer is Mexican Rodrigo Prieto, will hit theaters on October 19, when Scorsese’s followers will be able to get to know this new story, which, the director assured, will not be the last of his career, as he is still eager to tell through his work.

What is the film about?

The film portrays an Osage community in 1920s Oklahoma, where its members have become rich thanks to the oil discovered on their land and follows Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio), a newly arrived man who strikes up an unlikely romance with a native woman, Molly Kyle (Lily Gladstone).

The film is based on the book of the same name by David Grann, which links the origin of the FBI with the investigation into the numerous deaths of the Osage after the arrival of white men who took advantage of them.
