Cancun International Airport maintains its leadership by registering a 7.1% growth in international tourism compared to last year from January to September, reaching 15.7 million passengers.
According to Aeropuertos del Sureste, international arrivals represent 63% of the influx of passengers arriving to the destination, although September, being a low season month, represented a minimal drop in passenger traffic compared to last year.
From January to September, the airport handled close to one million more travelers than the previous year, which continues to drive the increase of air routes, and thus detonate air connectivity from one of the most important airports, which connects with more than 111 cities in Quintana Roo.
The Center for Tourism Research and Competitiveness reported that three destinations account for three thirds of international tourism arrivals to the country. Cancun is the leading destination with 15.7 million arrivals, followed by Los Cabos with 3.6 million and in third place is Puerto Vallarta with 2.8 million, the latter with a double digit growth of 10.7%.
However, in the three airports, September reported a drop in passengers, which in the case of the Mexican Caribbean destination was of 4.9%, due to the low season that affected the arrival of travelers, although it is expected that by November the growth of tourism to the Mexican Caribbean destinations will report an increase due to the winter vacations that will bring an increase in visitors from Canada and the United States.
Javier Aranda Pedrero, director of the Tourism Promotion Council of Quintana Roo, the behavior of connectivity is reporting an increase in short distance flights, with an increase of 9%, while those of long distances are declining and so far this year showed a decrease of 12%, even so the Mexican Caribbean reported connectivity with 28 countries.
