The National Seismological Service (SSN), which initially reported a magnitude of 6.3, located the earthquake’s epicenter 12 kilometers northwest of Matías Romero, Oaxaca, at 11:06 PM local time (05:06 GMT).
“An earthquake perceptible in Mexico City is recorded. Emergency protocols are activated,” wrote Martí Batres, the head of the government of Mexico City, on his social media accounts.
The city’s leader added that “a mild tremor was felt in Mexico City. At the moment, no damage has been reported.”
Salomón Jara, the governor of Oaxaca, stated that “civil protection protocols have been activated,” but he also reported no damages for now.
“Our personnel are checking for possible effects throughout the state. We ask you to remain calm and alert to the instructions through official means,” the governor wrote on the X social network.
Other states that felt the earthquake included Morelos, Puebla, and Veracruz in the central and eastern parts of the country.
