The Airbnb application began in 2008 when two designers with spare space hosted three travelers in their home. Since then, millions of people have embraced this new idea of accommodation, where hosts and guests connect to rent out their apartments or rooms to those who want to experience a destination or enjoy a place like home.
In this instance, a young woman from Yucatán exposed on social media the negative experience she had with her latest Airbnb rental in Mérida. What was supposed to be a celebration turned into a sour experience as she claims her family was discriminated against solely for being local.
In her Facebook post, the user Fredeswinda Ake states, “My dad paid in full; however, the host sent a message saying they do not accept locals. It infuriates me because the app doesn’t mention that they don’t accept locals.”
But that’s not all; the host, named Alonso Daniel, made the young woman’s father cancel the reservation because it wasn’t a tourist family who would be staying there.
What caught the attention of social media users is that the house has a Mayan name, “Casa Ka’a Pe’e Kay,” spoken on the Yucatán Peninsula and not in other parts of the country. This caused anger as it seemed to be “exploiting” the culture, leading people to leave comments in the property’s reviews about the situation. Many recommended filing a complaint with the relevant authorities.
