Before members of the federal Chamber of Deputies, Jorge Alfredo Puch Mukul, a native of the community of Petectunich in the municipality of Acanceh, Yucatan, made a call focused on preserving and promoting the Maya language, ensuring that its transmission from one generation to another does not fade away.
During his speech at the podium, Puch Mukul spoke in Maya for a few minutes, while the translation of his speech was displayed on the screens. This graduate of the Faculty of Anthropological Sciences at UADY emphasized the importance of people in Campeche, Quintana Roo, and Yucatan acquiring knowledge in the translation and writing of their native language, which has at least 859,607 speakers.
“From an early age, my interest has been focused on preserving and safeguarding Maya customs and traditions, both nationally and on three occasions internationally. This experience made me understand that there are no barriers for those who wish to explore and learn,” he said.
Puch Mukul’s visit to the legislative chamber in Mexico City is part of the efforts of the Chamber of Deputies in favor of the preservation of national indigenous languages.
