In the past month of August, Yucatán surpassed its own record and achieved the lowest crime rate in its history, with a rate of 116.92 crimes per 100,000 inhabitants, more than nine times lower than the national average, which was 1,117.39 crimes per 100,000 inhabitants, maintaining its position as the safest state in the country.
According to the crime incidence report for August, the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP) pointed out that Yucatán continues to lead the nation with the lowest crime incidence, and its reduction represented a -5.1% decrease in cases, dropping from 2,875 crimes in 2022 to 2,727 in 2023, marking the lowest number of crimes in Yucatán’s history for the first eight months of the year.
The SESNSP indicated that Yucatán also maintains its position as the state with the lowest rate of intentional homicides in the country, with 1.07 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, more than 12 times lower than the national rate of 12.98 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Likewise, the state ranks first in the country with the lowest rate of four-wheeled vehicle theft, recording 1.29 cases, a significantly lower rate than the national rate of 48.66 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
As a result of the Governor’s efforts in terms of security, the state also ranks second in the country with the lowest rate of home burglary and fourth in pedestrian robbery, with rates of 3.09 and 1.84 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, respectively, both rates below the national average of 28.47 and 34.77 each.
Finally, Yucatán ranks fourth in the country as the state with the lowest number of extortion cases per 100,000 inhabitants nationwide, recording 0.43 cases, a figure lower than the national rate of 5.40 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
All of this is the result of Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal’s strategy through the Yucatán Seguro program, which provides equipment, technology, and extensive training to the police, increasing the number of cameras from 2,248 to 6,775 and the installation of 100 road arches to 219.
As part of these efforts, the C5i was created, and the Police Academy will become a Police University. Additionally, a modern Bell 429 helicopter, considered the best-equipped of its kind in all of Latin America, as well as fast boats, have been acquired.
In addition, the conditions of the agents have been strengthened with competitive salaries, access to private medical care in case of work-related accidents, and the possibility of obtaining a loan from the National Workers’ Housing Fund Institute (Infonavit).
Furthermore, scholarships are provided for university education to their children, covering 100% of enrollment and tuition, with a bi-monthly support of 1,600 pesos if they are admitted to any private or public institution. This includes the Circuito and Héroes Ciudadanos card, with more than 1,000 companies offering discounts to security forces and healthcare personnel.
All of these efforts aim to motivate police officers and improve their working conditions so that they respond with honesty and commitment in safeguarding the security of each and every Yucatecan citizen.
