Last month fewer tourists arrived at pre-Hispanic sites and museums in the state, reports the INAH.
Last August the archaeological sites and museums of Yucatan, administered by the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), reported a decrease of 12.4 percent compared to the same month in 2022.
This reversed the important affluence registered during the last two months in the tourist sites of the entity.
According to the Institute’s latest update, in the eighth month of the year the entity accumulated 292,159 visitors, a drop of 41,58 thousand 58 compared to the same month last year, when 333,217 registrations were reported.
They also detailed that, from January to August of this year, the archeological zones and museums of the State already accumulated two million 86 thousand 427 visitors, of which 921 thousand 81 were nationals (44.15 percent) and one million 165 thousand 346, foreigners (55.85 percent).
Furthermore, of the total accumulated so far this year, 2,46,708 tourists preferred to visit 15 of the 17 pre-Hispanic sites that remain open (98.10 percent), while 39,719 chose to visit the Regional Museum “Palacio Canton” (1.90 percent).
INAH detailed that in the first eight months of 2023, the archaeological zone of Chichen Itza has already received one million 544 thousand 587 tourists, a figure that places it as the most visited in the whole State and even in the whole country, above Teotihuacan (in the State of Mexico) and Teotihuacan (in the State of Mexico)
which reported 1,273,289, and Tulum (Quintana Roo), which registered 972,734.
Other archaeological sites in Yucatan that reported a good number of visits from January to August are: Uxmal, with 179 thousand 809 people; Ek Balam, with 131 thousand 376; Dzibilchaltún, with 45 thousand 43; Mayapán, with 38 thousand 869; Kabah, with 29 thousand 400, and Izamal, with 17 thousand 53.
Last August alone, the wonder of the modern world also received a total of 221,103 visitors, a figure that once again placed it as the most visited archaeological zone in all of Mexico and whose trend points to reaching and even surpassing two million visits by the end of 2023.
Other zones that received an important number of visits last August were: Uxmal, with 28,780; Ek Balam, 15,766; Dzibilchaltún, 4,785; Mayapán, 3,249; Kabah, 2,831; and Izamal, 2,496 accesses.
According to tourist service providers and guides, the months of September and October are considered low season, so there will be another upturn in visits to these sites until the end of November and December, when the Christmas season begins.
