November features two long weekends for students and workers that will allow a total of four days of rest throughout the month, due to the celebrations of the Day of the Dead and the Mexican Revolution.
After September did not have a long weekend on Independence Day, and October does not have holidays either, the calendar of the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) states that in November there will be more days off due to a series of commemorative reasons and also work related to teachers and other education workers.
Two long weekends in November: One is four days long, and the other is three days long, as reported by the SEP.
In addition, one of the long weekends will coincide with a holiday established by the Federal Labor Law, so both students and workers will have a long weekend.
When will be the two long weekends in November?
According to the SEP calendar, preschool, elementary and high school students will have these two long weekends throughout November:
November 17 to 20
On Friday, November 17, there will be no classes due to administrative unloading day, while on Monday, November 20, being the third Monday of the month, the Federal Labor Law considers it a mandatory rest day due to the Mexican Revolution Day, which in fact is celebrated on the same day.
School activities may be less from Thursday, November 16, since that day is marked as a day of reflection of commemorative days, that is, activities are carried out around the Revolution Day, which may range from tributes and special activities in schools, beyond classes.
In the case of formal workers, the only day off will be Monday, November 20, so their long weekend will last three days.
From November 24 to 26
In this case, the long weekend will be only for students and will last three days. This is because November 24 is the last Friday of the month, and according to the SEP calendar, there will be an intensive continuing education workshop for teachers.
This means that only students will not have classes; however, teachers and other education workers will have activities.
From Monday, November 27 to Thursday, November 30, there will be the delivery of ballots for parents.
The other day off for students that will occur in November will be Thursday, November 2, when the Day of the Dead is commemorated and there will be no classes. However, this day is a working day for workers, since it is not included in the list of holidays of the Federal Labor Law.
Remaining holidays, public holidays and days of official rest for 2023
Official holidays
- Monday, November 20: Anniversary of the Mexican Revolution, fourth long weekend of 2023.
- Monday, December 25: Christmas, last long weekend of the year. Banks will not provide service.
Unofficial holidays in Mexico
- Thursday, November 2: Day of the Dead
- Tuesday, December 12: Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe and Bank Employee’s Day. Credit institutions will not provide service.
What happens if I have to work on an official holiday?
The Federal Labor Law makes it clear that workers are not required to work on official holidays. However, there are cases in which the employer requests the worker to cover the workday. If this is the case, the employer will have to pay double the amount of a regular workday to its employee, according to Article 73 of the Federal Labor Law.
