The Ariel Awards, the most prestigious recognition for Mexican cinema, celebrated their 65th edition on September 9, 2023, in a historic ceremony that took place for the first time outside of Mexico City. The event was held at the Teatro Degollado in Guadalajara, Jalisco after a financial crisis forced the suspension of the awards in 2022.
The big winner of the night was BARDO, Falsa Crónica de unas cuántas Verdades, the latest film by acclaimed director Alejandro González Iñárritu, which won nine awards out of 12 nominations, including best picture, best director, best actor for Daniel Giménez Cacho, and best original screenplay.
The film is a mockumentary that follows a journalist who investigates a series of mysterious deaths in Mexico.
Other notable winners were Huesera, a horror film by Michelle Garza Cervera that won six awards out of 17 nominations, including best actress for Natalia Solián and best cinematography, La civil, a drama by Teodora Ana Mihai which won three awards out of 16 nominations, including best co-actor for Juan Daniel García Treviño and best editing; and El norte sobre el vacío, a historical film by Alejandra Márquez Abella that won two awards out of 16 nominations, including best co-actress for Dolores Heredia and best original music.
The Ariel Awards 2023 showcased the diversity and quality of Mexican cinema, as well as its resilience in the face of adversity. The ceremony also honored the memory of the filmmakers and actors who passed away in the last year.
