Citizens from different parts of Mérida joined together as a team of volunteers to participate in the Community Spay-Neuter for street dogs organized this weekend by federal deputy Cecilia Patrón Laviada.
“A community that takes care of its animals is more prosperous and happy, that is why we promote this type of activities whose essence is to ensure their welfare,” said the legislator.
Through the “EsteriMóvil” program promoted by the deputy, 124 dogs in street situations were attended to on Saturday and Sunday.
“The most outstanding thing is that it is a team work to which dozens of citizens joined with different tasks such as catching the puppy, transferring it and participating in its post-operative care” commented Cecilia Patrón.
“In this way we also attend to a public health problem, reducing the number of animals that can be transmitters of diseases” she added.
After the surgery, the animals were ear-tagged to identify that they are sterilized, vaccinated and dewormed, and that they are community dogs.
Street dogs that will reproduce more
Then, they are returned to their colony and it is very important because, being dogs that are used to people, due to their territorial characteristic, they themselves control the entrance of other animals.
In this way, a sterile community is created, which contributes to reduce animal overpopulation, but also generates a community among citizens who understand the importance of the community.
