Restoration of Monuments on Paseo de Montejo continues

Almost a year and six months have passed since that night of March 8, 2022, when the monuments on Paseo de Montejo to Felipe Carrillo Puerto and Justo Sierra were painted in the march for International Women’s Day.

Furthermore, on that occasion the Monumento a la Patria and the Montejo conquistadors, on Paseo de Montejo itself, respectively, were also painted.

Although the paintings and graffiti on two monuments on Paseo de Montejo are still evident, the process to remove them is not easy and requires a series of studies and protocols that are already being carried out, explained Anna Goycoolea Artis, director of the INAH Yucatán Center.

In the last two months, working groups have been held between the INAH and the authorities involved in the issue, to work in a coordinated and efficient manner, she stated.

Goycoolea stressed that there is interest and willingness on the part of all parties involved to ensure that both monuments are once again free of stains and there is even talk of intervening in other damaged structures for their proper cleaning, care, and conservation.
