Yucatan’s governor, Mauricio Vila Dosal, delivered this Wednesday, September 13th, the reconstruction of the wooden dock in the port of Chelem, located within the municipality of Progreso.

In a working tour of this point of the Yucatan coast, Vila Dosal was also distributing packages of school supplies, uniforms and breakfasts of the Impulso Escolar program, equipment for cultural spaces, as well as supplies and tools of the Peso a Peso initiative, and where the governor also monitored the improvement works on the Casa Ejidal of this town.

As part of his work agenda, Vila Dosal, accompanied by the mayor of Progreso, Julian Zacarias Curi, delivered the reconstruction work of this platform, which now adds to the many things this port has to offer its inhabitants and tourists.

In his message, Vila Dosal, in the presence of the head of the Secretariat of Tourism Development (SEFOTUR), Michelle Fridman, affirmed that his administration is working as a team with the Progreso City Hall in various programs and works, such as the wooden pier.

He emphasized that in the last 5 years, in which he has been governor and Zacarías Curi mayor, this municipality has advanced a lot and the changes are visible, but they will continue working hand in hand with the people of this port.

“There are still things to do, but today we can affirm that Progreso has advanced more in these 5 years than in the last 20 years and we will continue to do so,” he emphasized before local representatives Erik Rihani González and Pilar Santos Díaz.

Speaking about the pier, Vila Dosal indicated that the work was done as a team since the state government built the structure and the city of Progreso installed the lighting, the decoration with a megalodon and a swing, and the traditional letters with the name of the town.

At the inauguration of Chelem’s wooden pier, Luis Jorge Montalvo Duarte, director of the Institute for the Development and Certification of the Physical, Educational, and Electrical Infrastructure of Yucatan (IDEFEEY), explained that 102 linear meters of wooden pier 4 meters wide were built for tourist and recreational use, as well as a meeting point for the inhabitants of the port and its visitors.

With this work, which represented an investment of more than 4.7 million pesos in favor of 4,800 inhabitants, the port offers the possibility for people to have a viewpoint to enjoy the sunrises and sunsets in this important point of the Yucatan coast, from a safe and accessible place, just a few streets away from the heart of Chelem.

The wooden pier is built with hardwood or sapote wood, a certified forest product treated with mothproofing solution, planed, edged, and secured with stainless steel hardware, including wooden posts driven to a depth of 2 to 3 meters, with crossbeams and longitudinal beams, plank flooring, as well as a 5 x 10-meter wooden viewing platform, including perimeter handrail.

Distribution of supports

While bringing the support of his administration closer to the people of Yucatan, Vila Dosal continued with the distribution of the benefits of Impulso Escolar, which this year 2023 is distributing 262,795 packages of school supplies to primary and secondary school students; 200,363 uniform kits, which include two white shirts, a pair of black shoes and a backpack for elementary school boys and girls.

He also confirmed the delivery of 117,392 packages of hot and cold school breakfasts to preschool, first and second grade elementary school students, and hot breakfasts to preschool students and all six grades of elementary school.

Together with the head of the Secretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (SEPASY), Rafael Combaluzier Medina, Vila Dosal led the distribution of support for the Peso a Peso scheme, Fisheries component, through which this year 6 million pesos will be distributed to benefit more than 650 beneficiaries, who will be able to access inputs and tools such as spare parts for engines, fishing gear, communication and geolocation elements, life jackets, accumulators, shad, among others.

As of today, there are 368 fishermen and fisherwomen registered in the scheme, which represent the application of resources for 3.1 million pesos, however, the application window will remain open until September 29th.

Also, in the presence of Loreto Villanueva Trujillo, head of the Secretariat of Culture and the Arts (SEDECULTA), the governor gave the cultural space of this district an equipment kit consisting of furniture, screens, guitars, amplified speakers, keyboards, microphones and workshop instructors, with the aim of carrying out artistic awareness actions in this port, aimed at preserving the climate of peace and security in the state.

Finally, Vila Dosal delivered the works of the program of Improvement and Equipment of the Ejidal House, benefiting 121 ejidatarios of Chelem, which consisted of scraping and change of paint throughout the house, labeling of titles and logo, installation of fans and ceiling lamps; as well as the delivery of chairs, table, file cabinet, microphone, speaker, LED ceiling lamps and fans.
