26/09/2023 | Mérida, Yucatán-. In order to commemorate the Global Action for Legal, Safe and Accessible Abortion, on Thursday, September 28th (28S), Merida will hold a rally in the Plaza Grande at 6:30 pm, in addition to different alternative activities.
The rally is aimed at women and people with gestational capacity, the latter will have an exclusive place.
There will be a clothesline for denouncing sexual violence, as it is one of the main reasons why women in Yucatán decide to have a pregnancy interruption.
Kelly Ramirez Alpuche, director of the organization Igualdad Sustantiva Yucatán AC, shared that on September 28 and 29 they will hold an informative forum at the Faculty of Anthropological Sciences.
This year, Igualdad Sustantiva will address the issue of bodily emancipation, “regardless of the advances or not in legal matters, we need to be able to access free, safe, autonomous and decentralized abortion as pregnant women”.
The organization carries out different works throughout the year around abortion, such as activities with the NGO Tu Decides, which consists of informing about the procedure with medication, in addition to artistic and cultural activities under the same theme.
“Abortion has a historical context of clandestinity, however, now we are talking about safe procedures for voluntary interruption.”
Regarding the challenges that currently exist in the state to be able to access safe and free abortion, Alpuche added that just now that political campaigns are on the way it is a good time to dialogue on the subject and not only use it as an electoral strategy.
“It would be ideal to put on the table the legal inconsistency that exists between state and federal laws on abortion. At some point the state penal code would have to be modified so that it is in accordance with what the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation indicates regarding access to women’s sexual reproductive and non-reproductive rights.”
