Mayor Renán Barrera guarantees the safety of children and youth in schools across Merida

The Safe Return to School 2023-2024 program kicked off this morning, where courses will be given to prevent crime, violence and drug use.

Merida, Yucatan, September 18, 2023.- As City Hall we are committed to the safety, trust and social cohesion of our community, because it is we ourselves who built the social fabric of Merida and who have managed to establish a harmonious and peaceful city, said Mayor Renan Barrera Concha.
At the inauguration of Safe Return to School 2023-2024 at the “Narcedalia García Aguilar” Elementary School, located in the Las Torres neighborhood of Ciudad Caucel, Mayor Barrera Concha emphasized that the

Municipal highlighted that the Educational Police program serves students from preschool to high school, providing them with courses focused on preventing addictions, violence and the commission of crimes to generate safe environments for everyone.

“With these actions we maintain our presence in the schools of the municipality, to work with teachers, principals, parents and students to build a safe space for everyone, where we lay the foundations to build a future where harmonious coexistence and social peace prevail,” he said.
Barrera Concha indicated that this crime prevention strategy is possible thanks to the closeness and trust that the population has in the police forces, as well as to the training received by the members of the Educational Police.

“Police officers are trained to address these issues through talks aimed at schools and workplaces, in order to save lives and keep the social fabric of our community together in the future,” he said.

In addition, he added, the Municipal Police have special training to present information to our children, to expose the biological or legal consequences of consuming alcohol or drugs.

The Mayor informed that in this 2022-2023 school year, talks were given to 380,301 students: 365,109 with DARE; 9,466 with “Tú Decides”, 4,653 with “Preventing Crime”, another 945 with “School Vigilantes” and 128 with “School Visits”.

For his part, Mario Arturo Romero Escalante, director of the Municipal Police, stated that at the Mayor’s request they are always looking for the best actions to bring preventive programs closer to the children and young people of the Municipality as a strategy to prevent crime and addiction consumption.

“We want Merida to continue to remain as one of the safest cities in the country, therefore, through these preventive programs our agents are in the classrooms working to promote prevention, respect and coexistence to build a better future for everyone,” he said.

Diana Echeverría Vera, principal of the “Narcedalia García Aguilar” elementary school, mentioned that the “Safe Return to School” program is key to motivate children to live in peace and harmony, actions that distinguish Merida.

“Preventive education against the consumption of illicit substances and alcohol is important and fundamental in educational centers so that they can become future citizens who are healthy and committed to their municipality,” he said.

Karem Achach Ramírez, local deputy; Celia Rivas Rodríguez, councilwoman president of the Public Safety and Transit Commission and Hassily Hassim García Minaya and Arodi Gabriel Borges Chablé, sixth grade students of the “Narcedalia García Aguilar” elementary school, accompanied the Municipal President at the event.
Also Joana Noemí Briceño Ascencio, director of the Center for Social Crime Prevention (CEPREDEY); Felipe Alcocer Aguilar, head of the Physical Education and Health Promotion Supervision Area of the State Government’s Secretary of Education; and Diana Morelos Echeverría and Mónica Cruz Ramírez, technical pedagogical advisors.
