To raise awareness in society about the importance of bats in nature and people’s lives, and promote respect for the conservation of these winged mammals, on Sunday, October 1, the city of Mérida will host the “First Yucatecan Festival of Los Bats: Meet our guardians of the night”, which will take place at the Cultural Center of the Autonomous University of Yucatán (Uady).
The initiative is promoted by the Program for the Conservation of Bats of Mexico (PCMM), Uady, the Latin American and Caribbean Network for the Conservation of Bats (Relcom), and BUM-Urban Biodiversity of Mexico, which convened the people to join this movement.
Among the activities that will be carried out are a “Murci-caminata” (Bat-walk), which will be a group and peaceful demonstration that will start at 8 a.m. with a departure point from the University Cultural Center; as well as a “Murci-Marathon” (Bat-marathon), which is a recreational activity that will be carried out in teams of 4 people.
Relcom’s PCMM is dedicated to promoting and carrying out bat conservation activities in Mexico, as it is believed that environmental education is a powerful tool to combat violence and eliminate stigmas related to biodiversity.
“As a network and with citizen participation, it is possible to achieve significant goals for the conservation of our bat species and their habitats,” it is mentioned in a statement. There will be conferences and various conservation activities.
