Elderly man in critical condition after getting trapped in a fire in Progreso

A couple of elderly individuals experienced moments of terror and fear when they became trapped inside a house on fire in the port of Progreso, Yucatán.

The incident took place on a property located on 29th Street (between 88th and 88th-A), in downtown Progreso, prompting a call to the emergency services.

According to reports, residents of the area informed the authorities that smoke was coming out from a property at the mentioned address, leading a Progreso Municipal Police unit and firefighters from the Public Security Secretariat (SSP) to respond.

Upon arrival, authorities were informed that an elderly couple lived on the property, and it appeared that they were trapped amidst the flames.

It was revealed that a woman was on the ground floor and managed to escape the fire unharmed, while a man identified as Fernando ‘N,’ 70 years old, became trapped in an upstairs room.

Unfortunately, the elderly man suffered burns and needed to be transported to a hospital in the city of Mérida.

Despite firefighters, police, and paramedics arriving promptly, it was reported that the 70-year-old man suffered third-degree burns on various parts of his body, mainly on his arms and legs. His condition is reported as critical as he was transported to a hospital.

The exact cause of the fire in Progreso is not known, but authorities suspect it may have been due to an electrical short circuit.
