Tren Maya is affecting the water table in the Yucatán Peninsula (“Sélvame del Tren”)

The negative effects attributed to the Mayan Train began to be seen in the opacity of the water in the underground rivers of the Sac Actún system , in the Dos Ojos park.

In recent days, divers have documented the detachment of sediments, something never seen before, in the various sections of this system. Where until a few months ago there were crystalline and transparent waters , now only cloudy water remains .

José Urbina Bravo, a cave diver and member of Sélvame del Tren , recalled that they had already warned of these effects.

“We have found many particles in these cenotes, they do not come directly from the cenote, but from other parts of the aquifer”.

The Dos Ojos system is part of Sac Actún , the largest underground river system in the world with around 1,800 kilometers explored.

Dos Ojos is located in the municipality of Tulum, about 40 kilometers south of Playa del Carmen . It is one of the points of greatest tourist interest due to its number of flooded underground caves, an attraction for divers from all over the world.

It is part of the communal lands of Jacinto Pat , one of the most important community organizations in the Riviera Maya. Just to the west of the lands of the ejido now pass the works of the Mayan Train section 5 South.

There the federal government had a successful negotiation for the acquisition of land for public utility through expropriation. However, as the members of Selvame del Tren point out, the consequences can already be seen.

“These are not the only cenotes, the only impact to the aquifer that has been affected. We have seen many cenotes that have been affected, with cloudy sections, these particular cenotes are very important for tourism,” Urbina said.

José Urbina filed an amparo claim last year on the grounds that his legitimate interest in the right to a healthy environment was affected.

He said in his claim that this is configured in the affectation of caves and cenotes , precisely where he carries out his work as a diver.
