A man accused of killing a dog in the Chuburná neighborhood, in Mérida, was charged with the crime of animal abuse and will remain in pretrial detention.

As we reported last Sunday, the case caused outrage among residents of that neighborhood and animal rights activists at the cruelty with which they killed the dog named “Rufino” since they decapitated him.

Today, in a statement, the State Attorney General’s Office reports that they charged the man at the Oral Justice Center, before the Control Judge of the Second Court of the First Judicial District.

At the hearing, the defendant refused to give a statement and requested that his legal situation be solved within 144 hours. Because of that request the corresponding hearing was set for August 18.

Given this situation, at the request of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the judge imposed the precautionary measure of preventive detention for the duration of the process for the man.
