Once again, Yucatan became the perfect natural setting for the preservation of the Hawksbill sea turtle, with the release of around 100 hatchlings, as part of the efforts promoted by governor Mauricio Vila Dosal for the protection and conservation of fauna and the environment for a greener Yucatan.

On instructions from the governor, the director of Management and Conservation of Natural Resources of the Secretariat for Sustainable Development (SDS), Toshio Yokoyama Cobá, participated with volunteers in the liberation, this time, on Sisal beach, reintegrating them into their habitat with the hope that they can return to Yucatecan coasts in their adulthood to continue their reproduction cycle.

Regarding this important fact, the SDS thanked the sum of efforts among the government, civil society, non-governmental organizations and academic institutions, which allow consolidating the fight for the conservation of these species that are under threat of extinction.

In the 2023 season, until the month of July, the sea turtles program in Yucatan recorded a total of 2,003 nests of the Hawksbill species, distributed in state-run camps, located in Sisal, where there are 1,015 nests; in Telchac Puerto, 901; and in Dzilam de Bravo, 87, with a total of 207,104 Hawksbill hatchlings.

These sites work with the support of 77 volunteers, mostly young people from these communities, which ensures a sense of belonging and responsibility.

In this holiday season, locals and visitors were urged to respect the protection measures for sea turtles, since the specimens are vulnerable at this stage and present difficulties on their way to the sea; Therefore, it is important to take into account that the transit of motorized vehicles and horses on the beaches continues to be prohibited, as it represents a threat to nests and hatchlings.
