A citizen initiative to make a small contribution against drought, high temperatures, and excessive concrete development brought together dozens of Conkal residents who planted over 100 trees along a bike path.
Montserrat Avendaño, the organizer of the reforestation, explained to La Jornada Maya that the residents of this municipality are aware of the need for more natural shade and the need to repair some of the damage caused by the concrete structures resulting from increased residential construction. Thus, they decided to plant trees along 22nd Street, where the public bike path is located.
“The idea is for the trees to grow and provide shade for pedestrians and everyone who uses this route for exercise or biking as a means of transportation,” Montserrat explained.
To achieve this goal, people organized themselves to select coordinators and distribute tasks. The Cuxtal nursery donated the trees, and the Conkal municipality provided tools, transportation, and holes for planting.
Due to the success of this first effort, the residents are already planning at least two more tree planting events in strategic locations where green areas are needed.
The organizer emphasizes that reforestation will be successful if everyone ensures the watering and care of the trees to ensure their survival.
The Cuxtal Reserve nursery has made up to 2,000 trees available to residents for continued tree planting activities, which will be announced soon.
