Renán Barrera promotes a sustainable Mérida

The Municipality of Mérida, led by Renán Barrera Concha, collaborates with civil society and various levels of government to protect natural resources and the environment, ensuring a better future for the municipality’s residents.

The Mayor stated that through proposals from the Consultative Council for the Sustainability of the Municipality of Mérida, which includes members of the city council, state departments, and civil society organizations, Mérida is progressing toward sustainability, combating climate change, and promoting animal welfare.

In this context, he emphasized the participation and commitment of citizens who join and engage in environmental programs driven by the Mérida Municipality through the Sustainable Development Unit.

Barrera Concha noted that joint efforts have been transversally carried out to strengthen equity actions in crucial areas like animal welfare and environmental conservation.

He mentioned that the Green Points program, established in 2018, has been highly successful in the city. It enables citizens to responsibly dispose of 18 types of waste through 11 Mega Green Points and 205 strategically distributed green points throughout the municipality. These collect items such as PET1, vegetable oil, small electronics, and batteries.

He further elaborated that in the last five years, 839 tons of waste have been collected, which equates to 4,213 tons of carbon dioxide.

Additionally, the Mayor highlighted that urban growth in the municipality brings new challenges, which are addressed strategically and comprehensively. This includes animal welfare and health, leading to specific actions such as the construction of a new Public Veterinary Hospital.

Campaigns for sterilization have been conducted in neighborhoods, subdivisions, and communities in Mérida, with over 700 sterilizations performed to date. Moreover, 1,505 veterinary consultations, 487 deworming treatments, and 172 rabies vaccinations have been administered.

Finally, responsible pet ownership is promoted through talks and workshops, raising awareness about the importance of enhancing the welfare and health of companion animals.
