Renán Barrera endorses his commitment to culture and the arts in Mérida

The Mayor supervised the remodeling works of the “Fernando Castro Pacheco” Cultural Center, where the works of the Yucatecan painter will be exhibited.

Mérida, Yucatán, August 7, 2023.- With the aim of continuing to strengthen culture and the arts in the Municipality, Mayor Renán Barrera is committed to creating more spaces for the various disciplines and artistic representations, mainly to exhibit to the main representatives of the different artistic disciplines.

In this sense, the Municipal President supervised the remodeling works of the “Fernando Castro Pacheco” Cultural Center, located in the facilities of the Municipal Archive in Paseo de Montejo (Av. Paseo de Montejo by 39), which will be a new space for the artistic community.

“This new cultural space is a tribute and a significant contribution from the Municipality to promote and preserve the pictorial work of Fernando Castro Pacheco, because both in Mérida, and in all of Yucatán, culture is privileged as a factor of social peace, which distinguishes and allows us to inhabit the best city in Mexico”, he indicated.

Accompanied by the members of the Board of Directors of the Fundación Casa de Estudio Fernando Castro Pacheco A.C., and its president Sergio Manzur Simón; the directors Irving Berlin Villafaña, from Culture, and David Loría Magdub, from Public Works; Barrera Concha explained that this Center will have on display the vast work of the Yucatecan painter and will also be a tribute to his career in promoting and disseminating the history of our entity.

“With the upcoming opening of this Cultural Center, we are going to fulfill the commitment that I made to Mr. Fernando Castro Pacheco during my first administration, who as a last will asked me to support him to bequeath his work to the people of Yucatán in an enclosure that protects and disseminate their work”, he explained.
We are giving the opportunity for all Yucatecans and visitors from Mexico and the world to learn more about the work of this important painter, he added.

When touring the rooms of what will be this new cultural venue, Berlin Villafaña recalled that on May 31, the members of the Mérida Cabildo unanimously approved the signing of the agreement with the foundation, whose main objective is the exhibition and protection of the works of the renowned Yucatecan painter.
Regarding the “Fernando Castro Pacheco” Cultural Center, he explained that the designated space will have three rooms and a corridor for the exhibition of the works of the Yucatecan artist, as well as a reception room for visitors and an area for selling souvenirs to benefit of the Civil Association. There will also be a space for the storage of the works fund, equipped with all the corresponding security elements.

The works consisted of rehabilitation of the access portico, reception, exhibition rooms, new lighting, bathrooms, irrigation system, electrical installations, new concrete floors in walkways, restoration of the facade, painting and waterproofing of the roof, he added.

For his part, Alberto Arceo Escalante, curator of the inaugural exhibition “De color y eternidad” by Fernando Castro Pacheco, explained that this exhibition invites us to reflect on how the Yucatecan painter built the body from a formalist perspective.
“In this exhibition we take a tour of different moments of European influence or Mexican school of painting where Castro Pacheco builds that very characteristic volumetry with which he paints women, hoisting a language between color and painting itself in a process of construction ”, he expressed.

He mentioned that the show also contains works that will see public light for the first time and highly emblematic paintings.
Finally, he specified that the exhibition consists of 56 works and is made up of large format oil paintings, engravings, lithographs, serigraphs and bronze sculptures demonstrating the versatility and mastery of Castro Pacheco to work with different materials.
