Poorly planned renovation of Mérida’s Calle 60

Complaints from merchants along 60th Street in the Historic Center of Mérida persist, underscoring what they view as poor planning by the Government of Yucatán in executing the works for the Gastronomic Corridor on this thoroughfare. The ongoing renovations have had an impact on many businesses during this Summer Holiday season.

It’s worth recalling that formal renovation works began in June on 60th Street as part of the establishment of the gastronomic corridor, connecting this avenue to 47th Street, extending to Parque de la Plancha. The project includes the renovation of the road, sidewalks, lighting, and other aspects, with an investment of 174 million pesos.

The complainants have highlighted several issues they are facing due to the ongoing renovation project. Dust, power outages, and water supply shortages are among the problems they are grappling with. Additionally, traffic disruptions, road closures, and tourists’ decreased confidence in visiting businesses due to the ongoing renovation works have also been cited as concerns.

As local businesses express their dissatisfaction with the way the renovation is unfolding, the city and the government need to consider the balance between progress and the challenges it poses to existing establishments.
