Mérida’s En Bici program will increase to 600 bicycles

The number of bicycles in the “En Bici” program will go from 300 to 600. Next Thursday, August 31, the free period comes to an end, said Ignacio Gutiérrez Solís, director of government in Mérida.

Regarding the charge, the official left open the possibility of an extension. “They will be affordable rates, within reach for everybody for eve, they will be offered by the day, week and month so that each person can accommodate their needs and acquire the payment that suits them, but thinking about who uses them the most: young people”, he expressed.

He stated that, until last Monday, they had registered more than 55 thousand users and 75 thousand trips. The people who use bicycles the most are young people from 18 to 26 years old, followed by those from 27 to 35 years old. Also, each vehicle is used on average between 4.5 and 5 times a day.

Up to now, the program has 53 bicycle stations, although some could change places, and even increase, as the system is intended to be functional.

Gutiérrez Solís indicated that the west campus from the Technological Institute of Mérida (ITM), the north campus of UADY, and several companies, are requesting bicycle parking.

Regarding the free extension of the free period, he said that it will depend on the analysis that is carried out because it must be considered that the beginning of the charge coincides with the return to school, so that possibility will be discussed.
