With a total price of 1,044.20 pesos, the Central de Abasto in Mérida once again holds the record for selling the most expensive basic basket in all of Mexico, surpassing the 987.80 pesos sold in Cancún, Quintana Roo.
This was presented to the head of the Federal Consumer Prosecutor’s Office (Profeco) during the weekly “Who’s Who in Prices?” report, focusing on the basic basket.
Before Mexico’s President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the official detailed which establishment, by region, sells this bundle of products at the highest price in Mexico, aiming to inform families about where to buy and at what prices.
It’s worth noting that Profeco considers a list of basic and high-consumption products for the Mexican population’s nutrition based on findings of consumption trends.
Taking into account the current minimum wage of 207.44 pesos, a person would have to dedicate six days of work to cover the cost.
The basic basket comprises 24 products:
- 1 bottle (946 ml) of edible vegetable oil
- 1 kg of rice
- 2 cans (140 g each) of flaked tuna (maximum 5% soy)
- 1 kg of standard sugar
- 1 kg of beef
- 1 kg of white onion
- 1 kg of jalapeño peppers
- 1 kg of pork
- 1 package (900 g) of black beans
- 1 package of 18 eggs
- 1 bar of soap
- 1 kg of saladet tomatoes
- 5 liters of cow’s milk (1 liter each)
- 1 kg of lemons
- 1 kg of apples
- 1 kg of bananas
- 1 large package (680 g) of white sliced bread
- 1 kg of white potatoes
- 1 bag of 4 rolls of toilet paper
- 1 package (220 g) of soup pasta
- 1 kg of chicken
- 1 can (425 g) of sardines in tomato sauce
- 4 kg of supermarket corn tortillas
- 1 kg of carrots
