Cultural tourism is one of the segments being targeted for consolidation through appropriate promotion of Isla Mujeres as a Magical Town, according to Eider Jahil Hot Pérez, General Coordinator of Economic Development and Tourism for the island.
“Several interesting activities are coming up, including the second International Magical Towns Fair, which will now be held in Los Angeles, California. Like the other Magical Towns in Quintana Roo, we will participate from September 21 to 24,” he confirmed.
The goal of these fairs, he pointed out, is to showcase the magic of the Magical Towns, including their culture, gastronomy, traditions, strengths like religious festivities, the Carnival, and all the cuisine.
The event, he added, offers the opportunity to present small samples of the island’s cuisine. It will become a space to welcome buyers, wholesalers, and retailers who are surely interested in the state’s Magical Towns.
The primary objective of this fair is to captivate the North American market, which is of the utmost importance for the destination. The aim is to continue growing presence, positioning Isla Mujeres, and targeting other segments. Within the Magical Town concept, he estimated that segments like cultural tourism, couples’ tourism, and family tourism can be strengthened.
Regarding the performance during this summer season, he affirmed that they achieved very positive figures. This season was further boosted by the celebration of Isla Mujeres’ 173rd anniversary, which included various events, such as a best ceviche competition, among other activities that attracted a larger number of visitors.
On average, occupancy in the municipality remained between 85 and 95 percent, although a decline has been noticed recently, heading into the autumn season. Particularly, a decrease in national tourism, which was strong during the summer, is expected, and they anticipate maintaining a hotel occupancy rate of 60 to 65 percent until November.
