At least 12 people died and 80 were injured in a human stampede at the Barea Stadium in Antananarivo, Madagascar, as a crowd attempted to enter the Indian Ocean Island Games.

“The state will take care of the injured, including 11 who need surgical intervention,” stated Christian Ntsay, the island’s prime minister.

It is unclear what triggered the stampede, but witnesses claim that there were long lines of people waiting to enter just before the incident.

A similar incident occurred in 2019 when 15 people lost their lives in the stadium and 100 were injured during the celebration of Independence Day.
