July, the first month of the 2023 summer vacation, was not very good for the Yucatan hotel sector, it did not have a significant increase, on the contrary, in general, hotel occupancy in the state fell by 8.59%.
According to the monthly measurement carried out by the Mexican Association of Hotels in Yucatán, last July had the same percentage of 57% occupancy as in the same month of 2022.
Only Mérida hotels had an increase of 2% in July, which confirms that the Mérida brand is the epicenter of national and international tourism. The lodging centers in the Yucatecan capital registered with the association had 59% occupancy.
The president of the association, Juan José Martín Pacheco, recognized that the statistics carried out among the affiliates showed similar figures, in general, to those of last year.
He specified that Mérida had 59% hotel occupancy last July. Compared to July 2022, which registered 57%, an increase of 2% was observed, a minimum figure for a long holiday season, with good weather and free from the restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In the rest of the state, the hotel leader stressed, there was a decrease of 8.59 points, registering 46% in this same month of July, while in 2022 the figure was 54.59% in the same period.
“In general, I consider hotel occupancy last month positive,” he said. “The lodging rooms on the beach had an occupancy of 51.66%, those of Valladolid, 47.48%; Izamal, 44.22%, and Chichén Itzá, 29.62%”.
The hotel owner recalled that this measure was calculated by sampling 5,419 rooms from 92 hotels throughout the state.
In 64 lodging centers with 4,623 rooms located in Mérida, and in 28 hotels with 796 rooms in the rest of the state.
Martín Pacheco predicted that this August, which has already exceeded the first half, the occupation will be similar or a little better because it is the last weeks of the summer vacations before the return to classes for the 2023-2024 school year.
“We hope that on average these two months, July and August, will be the best in 2023 since they are the longest vacation period of the year, and it is generally when the largest number of regional and national tourists come to Yucatan,” he said.
