The Secretary-General expressed relief on Friday upon learning of the release of the five members of the United Nations Security and Safety Department who had been kidnapped in Yemen on February 11, 2022.
António Guterres reiterated that kidnapping is an inhumane and unjustifiable crime and calls for the perpetrators to be held accountable for their actions. He also expresses solidarity with others who remain held against their will in the country.
On his part, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Yemen declared that he could confirm firsthand that the Yemeni colleagues were in good health as he flew with them on Friday from Mukalla to Aden.
“The five members of our staff are receiving support. They are in good spirits and in touch with their families,” said David Gressly. The coordinator thanked the Yemeni government and all those who helped secure their release and contributed to ensuring their health during their captivity for so long.
He also noted that while the entire UN family in Yemen is relieved by this release, other UN personnel remain held against their will in the country.
