Answers are sought behind the death of an elderly man found deceased in a pit in the Jardines de Mulsay neighborhood in western Mérida, amid suspicions that he was beaten to death.
On Thursday afternoon, the lifeless body of a man was discovered on a property located at 79-A street with 87-A street in the aforementioned subdivision.
The body was found after a strong foul odor was reported emanating from the overgrown property. A local resident entered the property and came across the gruesome discovery, as the body was in a state of decomposition inside a pit.
Given the situation, neighbors alerted the authorities. Officers from the Public Security Secretariat (SSP) arrived at the scene, took note of the incident, and cordoned off the area. They even closed 79-A street with Mérida 2000 for the retrieval and removal of the body.
It is worth mentioning that the body is believed to belong to an elderly man who had been reported missing for several days. This caused shock in the neighborhood. However, the cause of his death has caused consternation. An operation was initiated at the property where the man lived on Friday night. It is suspected that he was a victim of homicide.
According to what could be ascertained, a convoy of SSP elements arrived at the man’s residence, which is located on 103 street with 63 street in the Nueva Sambulá neighborhood, a few streets away from where his body was found.
According to the information gathered, the man’s property was secured after personnel from the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo) determined that the cause of death was due to multiple injuries.
Among the investigations, it is believed that the man may have been struck by a vehicle. However, the possibility of him being beaten to death is not ruled out.
It is worth mentioning that during the search of the property where the man lived, an individual was found who was presumably detained. Nevertheless, authorities are maintaining total secrecy regarding the elderly man’s case, even though it is suspected that he was murdered.
