The director of the Cultural Patronage, Mauricio Díaz Montalvo, confirmed that there was a record influx of visitors to the Chichén Itzá archaeological site in the past month of July.
In an interview, the official stated that up to 12 thousand people entered the site on summer weekends, leading to a record-breaking July in terms of tourist arrivals, a level not seen since the Covid-19 pandemic.
“This July will be a month of breaking records, after the pandemic. We still don’t have months like those before the pandemic, when more than 300 thousand or 350 thousand people arrived in a month. But now it’s going to be a very interesting post-pandemic month, and that’s generating significant economic activity in the area,” he stated.
Díaz Montalvo highlighted that there was also a substantial influx of visitors to the Uxmal, Ek Balam, and Dzibilchaltún sites, along with the tourist stops at “El Corchito” and the Meteorite Museum, both in the port of Progreso.
Furthermore, he reported a noticeable increase in visitors to the “Pasaje Picheta” in Mérida, which received up to 3 thousand people on weekends, along with the rise in arrivals at the Armando Manzanero House Museum.
