An elderly woman dies in a fire in southern Mérida

A woman burned to death last Sunday in a fire on a house in the Melitón Salazar neighborhood, in southern of Mérida.

After the report of the fire, the emergency services immediately arrived at the scene, but they could not do much, since the house was made of cardboard, and the flames had already consumed practically all of it.

The family who lived in the house managed to escape the fire, except for the elderly woman, who died in the conflagration.

The fire started around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, when 911 received a report from the residents of 103rd Street stating that smoke was coming from a home.

When the firefighters arrived at the site, they verified that it was a cardboard house, inside which several people managed to walk out, however, an elderly woman took shelter in the bathroom where she met died.

When the firefighters tried to put out the fire, they found the body of the woman, who had burns all over her body and was practically burned.

They immediately cordoned off the area and for several hours the rescue units worked to control and completely extinguish the fire.

Another woman was treated by paramedics from, meanwhile, the other members of the family were helping the firefighters with buckets of water to put out the fire.
